Victims of IPV Undergo More Imaging Studies Than Do Controls


Background: In the United States, >1 in 3 women and >1 in 4 men have been victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) including rape, physical abuse, or stalking. IPV is a worldwide problem and is a human rights violation. IPV has far reaching effects, both long- and short-term including asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, chronic pain, memory loss, neurologic symptoms, or poor reproductive health, emotional distress, suicidal thoughts, and suicide attempts. Children living in homes with IPV are at higher risk for anxiety, depression, aggressive behavior, and attention problems, as well as other medical problems. Health care costs were estimated to be about $19.3 million annually for every 100,000 women in 2007. Since radiologists have played a crucial role in the detection of nonaccidental trauma in children, and elder abuse, familiarity with the imaging findings in IPV could potentially improve clinical care.
