Do Physicians Have Fair Knowledge of Common Pediatric Emergency Radiological Images?
Background: Chest x-rays are the most commonly used imaging modality worldwide. Pediatric emergency departments (EDs) or pediatric urgent care centers usually do not have pediatric radiologist coverage during all times and must rely on the expertise of the ordering provider for initial interpretations. Objective: To evaluate the competency of non-radiologists in interpreting emergency chest x-rays, and to compare the performance of trainees of different levels to determine the necessity of radiologist input. Design/Participants: Cross-sectional online survey conducted in Saudi Arabia during a 1-month period involving 385 pediatricians and medical interns from various regions. Methods: Carefully selected questions addressed a range of x-ray abnormalities and pediatric emergencies.
