NRTI Use Is Associated With Increased Risk of POAG


Objective: To investigate the association between nucleoside and nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) use and the risk of developing primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). Design: Retrospective cohort study. Methods: This study used data from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-sponsored All of Us Research Program. De-identified patient data were obtained and systematized nomenclature of medicine terms were to identify individuals with HIV infection. Prescription drug records were then used to identify those who had at least 1 prescription of NRTI medication dispensed. The database was also queried to identify individuals with a diagnosis of POAG. A cohort of control subjects not using NRTIs was created by propensity-score matching. The overall cohort had a ratio of 1:10 NRTI users to non-users. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between NRTI use and POAG diagnosis.
