LOY in Men Is Associated With Increased MI Risk

Background: Loss of Y chromosome (LOY) refers to the somatic loss of the Y chromosome in a proportion of circulating leukocytes in the peripheral blood of older men. There is accumulating evidence regarding LOY and cardiovascular risk, although prospective studies are lacking. Objective: To determine whether baseline LOY is associated with long-term cardiovascular risk among older men without known cardiovascular disease, using extended follow-up from the ASPREE (ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly) trial, which randomized patients to 100 mg of aspirin daily or placebo, with validation in the UK Biobank cohort. Design: Extended follow-up study of the original ASPREE study. Participants: The initial ASPREE trial recruited 16,703 Australians and 2411 U.S. participants aged ≥65 to 70 years without known cardiovascular disease. This study included 5131 patients from the original study, with successful measurement of LOY. The external validation study was obtained from the UK Bio more...
