Dementia Nursing Home Entry, Mortality
Background: Dementia is highly prevalent, but there are little consistent data about prognosis, with wide ranges of survival expectations. The most recent systematic reviews included studies from before 2012 and could not quantify the effects of factors, such as age and cause of dementia. There have been fewer studies examining nursing home admissions. Objective: To summarize available evidence on time to nursing home admission and death among people with dementia, and to explore prognostic indicators. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: Longitudinal studies of survival and nursing home admission in dementia patients were selected. Studies had to include ≥150 subjects followed for ≥1 year. The authors used a machine learning tool (ASReview) to screen studies; they then extracted the key data and analyzed it with regression models.
