Most After-Hours Resident CT Report Discrepancies Are Minor


Background: The increasing volume and complexity of emergency room CT scans have heightened the demand for rapid diagnostic results. In many training institutions, radiology residents provide 24/7 after-hours coverage. While this model fosters resident autonomy and exposure to diverse pathologies, it carries the potential risk of reporting errors that could impact patient safety. Previous studies indicate that major discrepancy rates among residents are generally low (0.3% to 10.0%), but there are limited data specifically focusing on modern after-hours staffing models. Objective: To evaluate after-hours CT report discrepancy rates between radiology residents and board-certified radiologists, assess the clinical significance of these errors, and identify factors that influence resident performance.
