NA Is Associated With Fewer Overall Complications After Hip Arthroplasty
Background: Disability in the geriatric population is often associated with hip fracture and the surgery that follows. Postoperative outcomes following hip fracture surgery in elderly patients have been extensively studied, but there is conflicting evidence about the impact of general anesthesia (GA) versus neuraxial anesthesia (NA). Objective: To compare the rate of postoperative complications after hip fracture surgery in elderly patients receiving GA versus NA. Design: Retrospective cohort study using a national database in China. Methods: Patients aged ≥60 years undergoing hip arthroplasty secondary to hip fracture between 2013 and 2019 were included. Patients with bilateral procedures or missing demographic data, anesthesia type, or medical records were excluded. Results: The GA group consisted of 50,194 patients, and the NA group consisted of 40,561 patients. A total of 31,011 propensity score–matched pairs were included in the final analysis. After propensity score ma
