mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines Linked to Drop in Death Rate for 4 Years


Background: As mRNA vaccines are relatively new, there is a lack of long-term mortality data, particularly in younger people, who are less likely to suffer severe consequences of COVID-19. This is the first population-based study comparing long-term mortality in vaccinated versus unvaccinated people 4 years after the first dose, and also the first study examining long-term mortality in younger people who are less likely to suffer severe consequences of COVID-19. Objective: To compare mortality in vaccinated versus unvaccinated individuals aged 18 to 59 years. Design: Cohort study. Methods: This study used data of 22.7 million vaccinated and 5.9 million unvaccinated individuals in France, aged 18 to 59 years who were alive on November 1, 2021. Exposure was receiving a first-dose of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine between May 1 and October 31, 2021. Individuals who had not received a vaccine by November 1, 2021, received a random index date.
