AI Can Accurately Evaluate Cardiomegaly on Chest CTs
Background: Cardiomegaly is a significant finding that is predictive of future serious events, such as heart failure, heart attack, and sudden cardiac death. Since chest CTs are commonly ordered, reporting on incidental cardiomegaly regardless of the indication for the examination may help identify important underlying cardiovascular disease. Objective: To determine whether artificial intelligence (AI) analysis of chest CT images could accurately determine total cardiac volumes (TCVs) when compared to echocardiography. Design: Retrospective study. Methods: The authors included patients who underwent a non–ECG-gated non–contrast-enhanced chest CT from October 17, 2023, until December 31, 2023. Inclusion criteria were an echocardiogram within 31 days of the chest CT. Medical and imaging data on consecutive patients were reviewed.
