Background: Use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) is prevalent. This class of drugs is known to affect gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) and vagal nerve function, but the association with chronic cough is not known. Participants/Methods: >2 million individuals (mean age, 55.8 years) with type 2 diabetes (T2D), among whom 58.9% were female. The study collected electronic data from 70 health care organizations in the United States. Participants were stratified into 2 groups: exposure to GLP-1RAs (427,555 individuals) or exposure to a different second-line diabetes medication, which included dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors, sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SLGT2) inhibitors, and sulfonylureas, (1,614,495 individuals).
