Radiologist Workforce Challenges Remain Despite Residency Position Expansion

Background: Although the volume of radiology examinations has been increasing, the availability of radiologists to interpret these examinations has become increasingly limited. Radiology residency positions are also increasing, but the actual number of radiologists becoming available to interpret these radiology examinations may be insufficient. Objective: To evaluate the radiologist workforce in terms of the radiology residency training positions and the active radiologists serving the U.S. population. Design: Retrospective descriptive study. Methods: Using the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) data from 2010 to 2025, the number of Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) radiology residency training position in the United States was obtained.
