US Can Detect Lipohemarthrosis, a Sensitive Indicator for Intra-Articular Fractures


Background: Musculoskeletal complaints are a common reason for emergency department (ED) visits. While standard X-rays are usually the first imaging step, they lack sensitivity to detect many soft tissue abnormalities. High-frequency ultrasound (US) has become an essential tool for high resolution assessment of soft tissues, including muscles, tendons, and subcutaneous layers. Objective: To evaluate clinical applications, characteristic US findings, and techniques for using musculoskeletal US in the diagnosis of acute conditions in the ED. Design: Narrative review. Methods: This review summarizes high-yield US applications for general radiologists. Methodology involves using high-frequency linear transducers and dynamic maneuvers—such as joint movement or muscle stress—to differentiate between normal and pathological tissues.
