CDI Is Common in Hospitalized Cancer Patients


Objective: To explore the prevalence and clinical outcomes of hospitalized patients with cancer and concomitant Clostridioides difficile Infection (CDI). Design: Retrospective cross-sectional study using the National Inpatient Sample database for cancer patients between January 2016 and December 2022. The actual data analysis was performed in the spring of 2025. Discharge summaries were used for identifying ICD-10 codes for CDI. Methods: 32,083,671 hospital admissions for cancer-related issues (mean patient age, 69.4 years) were reviewed. The diagnosis of CDI as a primary or secondary diagnosis was required. The primary outcome was in-hospital all-cause mortality. Secondary outcomes included need for colonoscopy, mechanical ventilation, kidney replacement therapy, and vasopressor support.
